Real Madrid are looking to hijack Liverpool’s move for Florian Wirtz, according to the latest report from Spain.

The German international is thought to be on his way to Liverpool after saying yes to the club about a summer move.

In saying choosing to move to Anfield, Wirtz rejected Bayern Munich’s long-standing offer.



The Bavarians have held a long interest in Wirtz and were reportedly confident of securing his signature ahead of other clubs this summer.

However, Liverpool ‘came from nowhere’ to become the front runners for Wirtz’s signature, with the Reds said to have convinced the 22-year-old during his trip to England couple of weeks ago .

Since then, Liverpool have obtained a verbal agreement with Wirtz, submitted their first offer for Bayer Leverkusen and are now in discussion with the Bundesliga club over the move.

Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen are said to be keen on completing the deal soon.

However, the latest report from Spain claims that Liverpool may be beaten to Wirtz’s signature even at this stage.

In a report titled “Wirtz is not impossible,” Spanish publication AS argued that Real Madrid is not giving up in their pursuit of Wirtz, despite Liverpool’s advantage.

“…the possibility of signing the Bayer Leverkusen playmaker still has a thread of life.

Madrid hasn’t lost hope,” the AS report said.

The report claims that while Liverpool are ahead of everyone else in the race due to their financial muscle, Real Madrid hope to lure Wirtz to the Bernabeu through the influence of his former coach Xabi Alonso.

The former Liverpool midfielder was officially unveiled as the new Real coach last weekend.

AS reports that his influence could be crucial in changing Wirtz’s mind to choose Madrid.

“While the Premier League is playing with a chequebook in hand, Madrid is playing with a different card,” the report added.

“And that’s where Xabi Alonso comes in.

The Tolosa native has been Wirtz’s coach in recent years.

A successful period with Bayer, but also difficult times they’ve experienced together.”
